Happy Sunday!
In quick personal news I’m very happy to be fully vaccinated now since Friday and able to finally plan to travel to see my family, friends or ANYONE that is not at work once i get my digital certificate to have with me all the time.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I’m afraid I CAN do that, Dave
AI is a fascinating thing.
The Night Watch is one of of Rembrandt’s most famous paintings and it gets even better with just two little bits of what happened to it.
Like that in 1715 in order to fit it between two doors at the now Royal Palace (then Amsterdam’s City Hall), roughly 4ft of it was simply cut off its sides and discarded.
Or that someone around the same time made a smaller scale copy of it (in its full, uncut glory).
Researchers at the Rjiksmuseum in Amsterdam use AI to reconstruct the original using the copy as reference and not simply “copy” the copy over. It was called “Operation Night Watch”. (I know it’s not a secret undercover mission but can someone workshop this next time?)
Because of course a painting is not only the picture, it’s a complete piece of the performance of the artist, their bush strokes, palettes, style and so on.
And what came out the other end is simply astounding and you should take 10min and watch the behind the scenes.
Also, every time neural networks are mentioned the Cyberpunk/Ghost in the Shell vibes intensify dramatically.
Three Mars-igos
Now is three Boston Dynamics robo dogs on a simulated Mars Mission less exciting than Matt Damon’s “The Martian”? Not to me.
I welcome a future in which production of tech is sustainable to the point that we can also explore our own planet of which we know so little half of it might as well be covered with a question mark on a map.
And now… Europe
In a desperate attempt to not talk about the Euro 2020 football championship that happen over here a year delayed due to Covid enjoy two adorable things from the old country instead:
