Money lies in your youth
… is not some cryptic example for compound interest or that you should fully embrace your inner child. At least not this time.
When I was young there were LOTS of print magazines about gaming. In my case PC gaming and they would be sorted neatly on my wall to wall shelf like in a very nerdy library. Which I think is called… a library?
The CDs that would come with them full of demos and shareware (remember those!?) put in cases with labels and once that was too much they would live on spindles from when we used to burn CDs because thumb drives didn’t hold the entire works of the library of Alexandria yet.
Now if I would know that people would PAY MONEY for a SUBSCRIPTION to my old magazine I would probably not brought multiple cars full of them to recycling a decade ago.
It does make me happy that the money goes to preservation of video games because most companies don’t worry so much about the legacy of their games even a decade past release. I’m looking at you, EA, for shutting down servers without a single player or offline solution.
Land Under
The area of Germany I live in as well as the adjacent BeNeLux countries and France were hit by major floods this week. On one day alone there was twice the amount of rain we usually get in an entire month which lead to scenes like this:
Having a plan now not only here but globally to prepare resilient infrastructure to weather like this but which is also accessible for all people (you’d be surprised how many things here are not wheelchair or stroller accessible) needs to be a priority.
So it makes me happy to see the rising support for the green party and their candidate for chancellor Annalena Baerbock who presents those plans.
All while the conservative crowd still wants to rely on fossil fuels to “keep the jobs” and waits for a more permanent ultimate solution for infrastructure instead of incremental improvement. Heck, we’re still waiting for nationwide fiber optic internet decades after it being proposed.
I can’t wait for elections in September.

Brew goes to the movies
After I mentioned the new Nicolas Cage movie “Pig” a few weeks ago the it’s out now and got a review that describe my feeling watching the trailer perfectly:
“(…) a melancholy John Wick for the Portland restaurant scene” (IGN)
It’s also just lovely to see trailers that don’t give you the whole action or show how it ends.
Now there’s another trailer out that gives me feelings: “Val”.
The story of Val Kilmer is an emotional rollercoaster I wasn’t aware of until last year when this episode of the NYT podcast “The Sunday Read” was released.
Up until then I cherished his comedic performance in Top Secret!, his suave in The Saint, the weirdness that ensues in the ‘96s The Island of Dr. Moreau (especially the ending) and of course the big ones like Top Gun and Batman. Though I feel his performance as the caped crusader is as underrated as George Lazenby having been bond. Most don’t even remember it I think.
